Students were quite aware of what day it was today as they came in and greeted me with "May the fourth be with you". A few notes to share with you. We are done our animal research, so library books can go home if they haven't already. Students created some fantastic books that we will leave in the classroom for a few weeks so that they have a chance to see each others book. We are also planning on writing stories about our animals.
Next in Social Studies we will be looking at the inuit. Students will have an opportunity to create a survival handbook while studying this resilient community. We have some fun activities planned around insects for this month. A reminder that swimming starts on Tuesday May 8th in the morning and goes every other day for the next 3 weeks (May 8, 10, 15, 17, 22 & 24). Again, thank you to those who were able to volunteer. Students have been working very hard on their animal research. I have had some students ask to take back public library books, which is okay for them to do. We decided today that students will have Monday and Tuesday of next week to work on their project in class. The project will be due next Friday April 20th. We discussed if they needed more time they need to come to me before the due date and arrange a time that works for them.
If your child is not finished the project by this Tuesday then they are to take it home to complete the project. I would encourage parents to minimally help their child with the project. This is a reflection of what they are capable of. With that said if more information is necessary asking your child probing questions would be recommended. Also, when editing underline common/sight words, where they've left out or added capitals and circling where punctuation marks should be, will encourage them to figure it out on their own. I have added a checklist of what is expected of this big assignment along with good copy templates on our website under SCIENCE. Also, there is a dictionary link on the homepage.
Thank you to all who were able to come for student led conferences. I know the students were very excited to show you what we've been learning in grade 2 and how they have been successful in their learning. I hope you all have a safe and rejuvenating spring break. This means that April is coming, so please check out the calendar on the homepage of our class website to see what is coming. We do still need 1 more volunteer for our April 10th in-school field trip. You can sign-up by clicking on the link in the post below. Also, we have a few more spots for swimming volunteers in May, so please sign up! Thanks to those of you who have signed up! We really appreciate it.
TEACHER'S PET - April 10th
On April 10th from 9am to 11am we will be having an organization called Teacher's Pet come into our classroom for an in-school field trip on boats & buoyancy. *Please arrive at 8:55am for important information about the session you will be helping out with. Please sign up at the following link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0844afa62fa4f94-teachers/65942312 SWIMMING - May 8, 10, 15, 17, 22 & 24 We are going swimming! Our swim time is from 10:00-10:40. We will leave the school at approximately 9:15 and be back at the school at approximately 11:25. Please sign-up to be a part of this exciting, multiple day field trip: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0844afa62fa4f94-swimming/65942312 Students are enjoying researching their chosen animal from the various books they have brought to school. If they are to be returned to the public library soon please renew their books as we are planning to use them until spring break. From their reading, they are quickly understanding how to take jot notes from what they read. Early next week they will be using the internet to fill in any gaps in their research. The next step will be to turn their research into sentences using their own words.
In social studies we have begun a gratitude journal. At the end of each school day your child will be writing about or drawing things that they are grateful for. This task stems from the First Nations practice of being thankful for everything they had. On Tuesday we will be having a special guest presenting on the Blackfoot Nation. We look forward to learning about their ways of life and some oral stories. Don Today we had Winter Sports Day! It was a lot of fun going around to all of the events. Thanks to any of you who helped out.
In Social Studies we are taking the next step from investigating our special place and taking a look at how this land we live on was special to others in the past. Specifically we are looking at the Blackfoot Nation and how they used West Springs. Here is the website we are using to explore: http://www.glenbow.org/blackfoot/EN/flash/index.htm In Science we are studying Hot and Cold Temperatures. This Friday students will be choosing their own animal to research, that lives in a cold climate. They are to get books from the public library to bring to school to research their animal. A notice will go home with them in regards to this assignment. We will begin research on Tuesday. Fourteen more days until Valentine's! In grade 2 we celebrate Friendship for this special day. If you would like to send Valentine's day cards you are welcome to do so, but your child must have a card for everyone in the class. I will be sending home a list of all the names of the students in our class (first names only). Please DO NOT send candy. Please check our webpage for all the fun things that will be happening in February and March: [email protected]
Happy New Year! We are back into the swing of things here in grade 2. It is always exciting to see the growth in students after only two weeks away.
We have great things happening over the next two months. Please check out the calendar on the homepage to see all that is going on. January 17th is one of our last field trips, so if you want to volunteer for a field trip this may be the one for you! We have 3 volunteer spots left. Please email me at [email protected]. Next week we will be starting addition and subtraction. We will be working on how to add and subtract up to 2-digits. I will soon be updating the math page to show you what the curriculum says a student in grade 2 needs to know by the end of grade 2 for adding and subtracting. |
